INTERVIEW:
You have designed 1 graphics for NOMAD boards, tees and sweatshirts, how did the collaboration come out?
While we were looking for a european distributor for RUSH one of the e-mails was sent to Ivan Moreno. He already knew the brand and while it was impossible for Nomad to distribute Rush clothing, the idea was born to do a collaboration together. Rush brand doesn’t make skateboards but designing skateboard graphics was always my dream. So we decided to make a mini-collection – a t-shirt, a sweatshirt and a skateboard.
Why did you use this graphic of this mythological medusa girl for the nomad collaboration?
I try to give my graphics a hidden meaning, i want them to have a message and not just to look good. The idea of Medusa as a sinister beauty seemed interesting both as a graphic theme
and as a message. I like details in graphics, and the snakes as Medusa’s hair gave a lot of opportunities for that. I interpret Medusa as a personification of skateboarding grabbing the rider in its claws.
This graphic is very complex, what is your working process to reach the final artwork?
I start with choosing a theme for the graphics. In this case its form was determined by the shape of the skateboard. The process of creation is usually long and laborious. I start with the general idea of the graphic and keep adding details until i’m satisfied with the outcome. It takes a lot of time since i can’t keep from improving the artwork. I’m a vector graphics fan so a lot of my work is playing with the bezier curves. I don’t track objects, it’s all hard manual work which lets me control each shape.
Who are your favourite artists or sources of inspiration?
I get inspired from all kinds of art, music, pop culture, street art and of course skateboarding which has been a part of my life for a long time. I don’t have gurus to which i look up to, i watch a lot of works by other artists but i filter all of it through my own sensibility.
We know that you have been skating for a lot of years, how are you linking skateboarding and art?
I put a well done trick next to painting or graphic design. I found the beauty of skateboarding during my high school days back in 1992, it was with me through the art school days and still is. Art and skateboarding were always intertwining with each other in my life. Skateboarding is a platform assembling different artforms, it’s always been inspiring for me. It only changed that i put more interest into graphic design nowadays. I look at skateboarding more as a way of expressing oneself than as a sport. I put style over difficulty of a trick. RUSH for me is a platform connecting people who have a similar approach towards life.NO NEED TO RUSH.
